Hi phil.
I have seen them on ebay. New old stock occasionally. If you have a part number for the assembly then you could try Florin (US) or the online databases. .
But all the topsiders are still asleep.
Have you managed to acquire a parts/service book yet?

I think I have one. It is in Bakersfield, California, but you're lucky that there'll be several containers leaving here destined for Brisbane sometime in the next couple of months. I'm sure our friends in Brisbane could be convinced to chuck it in there and postage from Brisbane to you would probably be pretty reasonable.
I'll try to make sure it is here, get a picture and serial number, maybe tonight if you're lucky, this weekend if you're not.
Pete.

I have one in our backyard that should work. Here are some pictures, and the serial number of the unit to which it is currently mounted. I believe that number is 4G496.
I can remove it and chuck it into the next container bound for Brisbane. Not sure how long it'll take to get there, and you'll have to make arrangements to get it from Brisbane to you. If you're interested, I'll send you the contact information for Gary in Brisbane, who will receive it. You two can work out how to get it from him to you.
Pete.

G'Day Pete,
According to the good book (original parts catalog for RD4) the part numbers changed at 4G772, from 2A5325 to 2A5585. That number continued through the early D4's. I dunno about the later ones as my D4 book was published in 1940.....
Based on that, I would have to hope it will work OK. I suspect it is the earlier version. I have absolutely no idea as to the differences.
What do you reckon? If you think it's worth giving it a go, then I will give it a go. If it doesn't keep time,
I will happily post it back to you. The reset to zero, and hopefully a service (oil up) would be great.
I suppose the next question is, how much?
Cheers,
Phill.

G'Day Steve,
I have an original RD4 parts book that came with the machine and a parts book for the D4 (dated 1940), so I have that side covered. I an still looking for a service manual though. I did manage to pick up a "Caterpillar Diesel Engines 4400 (D4)" service book. And I was given one for a D6 when I got my RD4. I recently acquired an RD4 operators manual.
If you see an original RD4 service manual, please let me know about it.
Cheers,
Phill.

I'll take it off and send it in the container to Brisbane. Email me your address, and I'll connect you and Gary (in Brisbane) so that he can post it to you from there when it arrives.
No charge for the hour meter, the reset to 0000 hours and factory specs for your tractor - Priceless!
Maybe in the interim someone will come along with some RD4 manuals to tell us whether or not it looks like it'll work.
Pete.

Phill - What is the fuel pump housing S/N of your tractor?
There must have been only a minor engineering design change to the hour meters.
My 1943 D4 4G parts catalog covers all the 4G series tractors from 4G1 to 4G9999.
It shows only one hour meter - P/N 2A5585. There is no mention of hour meter 2A5325.
My book says that 2A5585 meter will fit fuel pump housing S/No's 7P5469 to 7P13755.
The book does also note, that 2A5585 "is adaptable to machines with fuel pump housing S/No's from 7P876 to 7P5486 inclusive."
So it would pay to examine both your meter and Petes meter to find the small engineering differences. It's quite likely Petes meter will fit with some small modification.
I initially thought there may have been a gearing difference between the two different part numbers on the meters, possibly due to engine RPM setting changes.
However, I have checked the engine settings fiche for the RD-4 engine, and the engine settings did not alter for the entire production of the 4G series tractors.
Cheers, Ron.
