I have a 1938 D4 Cat and the pony motor has a bad magneto. The mag is an Eisemann, RT-2H, at least that is what came off of it. I need to know if that is the correct mag and if not what would be correct. And finally, if you have one for sale or have the capability to rebuild it I would really appreciate knowing. Hi Phillip,
the Eisemann originally fitted to the D2/D4 was an RC-2H. I have a manual at home that shows the variants - someone else might pipe up with what yours is. Anyhoo, I just saw an RC-2H on eBay so check that site out. Also, I think there are members on the board that most likely have some sitting up on the shelf. I bought mine off feebly and then sent it to Mainely Magnetos and they reconditioned it to a) looking brand new and b) a nice fat blue spark for, I want to say about 350 clams. You might be able to find one that already produces a good spark so no extra cost.
After a while, Cat started fitting American Bosch mags - they bolt up exactly the same and are interchangeable. Don't have access to what serial # they made the change at, but if you don't care about purist restoration, then just install whatever works (out of those two options). I had to get a mag because my tractor didn't have one so it was just as easy to get the correct one for my serial # (D2-3J4086)

Cheers,
Neil

I looked for the mag on eBay but was not able to locate it. You mentioned a place, Mainely Magnetos. Are they good to work with and do they have a web site to find information?

Hi Phillip,
yes, my experience with Mainely Magnetos was great, including dealing with Steve and the finished product. I'd use them again. That RC-2H I saw on ebay is now sold (for $34...) but you can try Steve, or Florin Tractor, or Jim Zimmerman of Orchard Iowa. I think there's a mag outfit in Chicago as well. Someone will have one sitting on the shelf, there's still quite a few of them out there.

Here is one in Minnesota: www.rebuiltmags.com/

Almost could not find this one!
Standard Magneto Sales Company, Inc.
4119 West Grand Ave.
Chicago, Illinois 60651
Phone 1-800-MAGNETO (1-800-624-6386)
Fax 1-773-235-2996
They have a website and I just accidently deleted it!

Anyways I'm curious about the difference between an "RT" and an "RC" magneto.

I've bought stuff off Hector (gemdozer) - he's good to deal with. All you need to do is send him a USPS money order for Canadian$x and your address.

A Wico XH-1907 is what Cat was selling as the latest replacement for the Eisemann and later American Bosch Mags found on the D2 and D4 Cats. The Wico is a direct interchange installation although I must admit, it seems not to be as well engineered as the earlier Eisemann and AB mags.
