WTB D2 3J cylinder head... cracks around valve seats - thoughts?

Hi, the magnaflux showed a bunch of cracks in my D3400 cylinder head. I don't know that it actually leaks though so I'm going to get the man to shiny up the valves and I'll fit it up and see if it pushes combustion gases into the coolant. I'm not sure if the cracks are just around the valve seats and that's what the man's worried about. Anyhoo, I wanted to investigate if anyone has a good condition head that they'd be willing to part with, in case I do need to replace this unit.

Cheers,
Neil.

Thanks Mike, do you happen to know what condition it's in? The man was looking at mine yesterday and it has a lot of cracks but he can't tell how far in they go - however he said he could plane the head and throw in a couple of new valves / inserts for me if I really wanted him to (no comeback) but for the $, I'd rather pick up a head that was in useable condition. Please let me know what yours is like and how much you're asking - thanks!
Cheers,
Neil.

Eddie/Old Magnet etc,
my 3J4086 main cylinder head is cracked so Mike D has another from a 5J - my head casting # is 4B3073 and Mike's is 7B596 - can I interchange these?
Cheers,
Neil.

Hi Neil,
sorry, I do not have that sort of info to hand. Need an NPR or such to follow the supercessions thru.
By some Parts Books I have it looks like the pre-combustion chambers are the main differences--there maybe others. Studs appear to be the same for both P/No heads.
From memory early chambers do not have the spline to remove them--need special Cat Tool Group that grips the chamber somehow by multiple pieces.

My Valve Seat Specs. Chart shows both Part Number Heads have the same valve seat specifications at least.

All Head Part No's for D3400 engines shown on my chart are :- 7B0596, 7B0607, and 4B3073--all have the same seat specs. as at 02-1958.
I stand to be corrected.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

edb is correct, the main differences from early D3400 heads to the late ones were in the precom chamber areas. The earlier ones had a different internal precom chamber design and also utilized small set screws in the side of the head to help retain them, whereas the later heads did not have these. It doesn't matter which style you have, everything will interchange just fine. Injectors, studs, valves and guides, and whatnot will fit in either one.

Mike, sent you a PM - do you still have that head available? I tried to talk my guy into rebuilding my head but he won't take my $$, so I guess I really need a new one.

Too bad, you didn't find out sooner, I could have picked that up in Walworth, thrown that in my Subaru to get it as far as Olean, NY on Feb 26th.
