I wonder if it is worth talking to General Gear in Boise, they sell the new tags for the D2, D4, D6, D7, D8 for fair prices, so I assume they have the correct size and shaped number stamps to create the new tags for the 22 in brass or alloy, might be a good item to have available for sale through our ACMOC Store?

Hi Lance, yes I realize that, my thinking was they could probably make 50 new plates for the 22 without too much trouble seeing as they obviously already have the necessary equipment to make them for the D2, D4, D6, D7 and D8.

Mike, I'm sure you're correct. I've had a long conversation with John Parks about his tags. He is passionate about the Cats, his supplier is very capable and I don't doubt that if he was confident in the demand, he could whip up a batch of Twenty Two tags in a jiffy.
John has a clean, un-rusted example of every Caterpillar tag down the side and across the top of the radiators. He also has some oversize examples that look the same as the radiator tags, but he said were for marketing purposes. He would really like to see those reproduced, but his supplier doesn't have a die machine big enough to reproduce them. Even if he found someone with a bigger die machine, he wouldn't reproduce them without a license from Caterpillar, since they have the actual name in the plate.
John and I talked about the Club using its license to sanction the production and he and I were both pretty excited about that project. That is still on the table, we just need to find someone with a big enough die machine to reproduce them and we might add them to the store. John really likes to see the machines with the proper tags, and also just to have them hanging around the shop. He even told me he had a list of which tags went on which machines, because there are a surprising number of slightly different sizes and placements of the lettering and holes. I had always had the impression there were about two different sizes, in horizontal and vertical, but John says there are more variants than that.
If we can find a die guy, I'll let you know,
Pete.

Thanks Pete, I reckon you have at least 27 "Die Guys" quietly sipping a coffee or Jack Daniels right now reading your post here on ACMOC thinking, "Dang it, I've got that machine sitting idle out in my Engineering Shop right now, I could knock those tags out for John and Pete in just a few minutes free of charge if anyone asked me nicely".
I bought my D2 5U steering clutch parts last year from John there at General Gear, I found him great to work with, as does everyone else I talk to here in Oz, we need more good folks like him sharing our journey, helping us along, because that's good for him too, seeing the restoration job being done right.
regards
Mike

Hi Steve, there are stamped tags, and cast tags, lets create them both with the guidance and help of John at General Gear, let him make a few bucks in the process.
