D2 steering question.

I recently bought a D24U. The left steering clutch lever position is several inches further back than the right lever. Free travel is close to 3" on both but I haven't measured it. The odd thing is that moving forward the left clutch doesn't release very well and I usually have to use a little brake to turn left. The right clutch releases better. However, in reverse, they both release much better and I can steer without using brakes except for sharp turns. Why would they release better in reverse? Any suggestions what I should look at?
Thanks, Jim

the 4u6373 and 5u13237 serie up should have 1 3/8 inch free movement on lever and before serie 4u6373 and 5u 13237 should have 3 inchs free movement on lever and you have to use the break when you need to turne.
