Would a D311 power unit motor bolt in to a D2 5J? I am pretty sure it would bolt into a 5U or 4U, but I don't know about the 5J. Please let me know. Also anyone know where I can find a manual for a T2 trackson loader?

Thanks,
Mike

First you,d have to see if the engine would bolt up to the clutch housing & the clutch would be compatable. I never seen one done but I,m sure someone on here has did it. Probably the throttle linkage would have to be altered some to work & I,m not sure on this engine but most ind. engines has a center sump in the pan & the oil pump scavange may be different so that would have to be checked into as the regular pan has the sump more toward the rear & dual scavange oil pumps to pump oil back to the main sump. The starting engine would be pretty much the same so no problems there & maybe someone can answer if the bell housing can be swapped from the 5J to the D311 & the radiator support on the front would also have to be checked out to see if that needs to be changed.Any way you look at it there will be changes but maybe it,s possible without too many head aches.

I believe someone had a D311 in an older model 212 grader (or it could have been the other way around). they were posting serial numbers for the machine asking questions about it's age sometime last year. probably on the old AMOC board. the way I remember, it was a transplant across the 1U/9T series break one way or the other so it would have had the D3400/D311 swap.

Here it is, perhaps you can find out more about what all was swapped

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Look to the FAQ section of this newsgroup for the tele number to CAT legendary service publications. I'm sure you can get a hi quality reprint. Stay away from Jensales and SSB reprints which are generally poor quality.

The starter housing on the early 5U looks the same as on the late 5J. There's a serial numberr break.

5U transmission case is 8B9377, 5J is 4B3914 or 5B5693 or 8B9377 depending on serial number, so is a good chance of a boltup to 5U bellhousing.

The 5U radiator support isn't anything like the 5J; it bolts up to a round boss on the timing cover.

My shop book shows "all models" of D311/D2 5U as having the same double pickup oil system, but I'd check to be sure.

I'd do a lot more reading in the parts books with serial number at hand before I'd say it can be done. There's a lot of details to check, like intake heater, throttle lever, air cleaner possition, gasoline tank, water connections, etc. I'm guessing you need a complete 5U engine package from firewall forward. Key word is guessing here.

How's it going, Al? Still planning to come to the NW this summer?

Jack

Took awhile to remember this one;) ;) but here's a "J" model with D311 installed.

Mike,
I have a parts manual for the T2 Shovel....it's not for sale but if you are hung up for information
I can post info until you locate one.

Thanks everyone for the information. I am currently soaking the stuck 5J motor with the hopes I don't have to swap in the D311, but you never know. I will be back for more info if I can't get it loose. As far as the T2 loader, how does one take it off the crawler? I could gas ax it off but I hopefully want to make this thing work someday. I assume I would have remove it to get the engine out if I have too? The loader looks like it is welded to the front cross member? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

Everything shown in the parts manual is bolt on.....not to say that it couldn't have wound up getting welded. I'm no expert on these units by any means but I would also conclude the unit would have to come off for an engine change. What is the serial number of unit? The parts picture attached is for the later units.
