I just purchased a 14A D8 with a stuck main engine. This cat has been sitting for about seven years or so. The guy told me that he had put diesel fuel and some penetrating oil in through the intake ports and tried to turn the engine by hand through the starter hole with a bar but had no luck. I was just wondering if anyone has any miracle cures or am I going to have to just bite the bullet and take of the heads??? Thanks Deano

It just depends on how much water/junk is in your cylinders and how patient you are. You can put as much snake oil and miracle juice down the stack as you please, but if it is full of water it won't get to the stuck parts unless you find an oil that is heavier than the water..
I would figure out how the water got in. If it is stuck from sitting without haveing the exaust covered you may as well tear it down IMHO... If not, get to where you can get a good purchase on the flywheel, fill her up with Kroil, or your favorite break her loose juice and try working it back and forth.
A guy I sold a 977 to that was stuck manage to get it unstuck and running without a tear down, but he played with it about 6 months...

Might have better luck prying down through the timing pointer access on top of the bell housing....otherwise Jdnut pretty well sums it up.

Since it's a straight drive, the best and easiest way to break it loose is to hook another dozer to it and pull it (or push). Get it to rolling and nuckle up the clutch. If the fan moves a little and then it slides the tracks, shift the directional lever (F - R) and do it again.

Putting oil in the intake ports won,t get any oil to some cylinders if the valves are closed. Remove the spray nozzles & pour down on top the pistons to get it where it will do the most good. If water is on top the pistons maybe the best thing would be to drain the cooling system down & remove the pre-chambers & suck the water off the pistons & then pour in the penetrating oil.To check if there is water on top the pistons you can just remove the spray nozzles first & run a small diameter rod down to check it & if they are all dry then just pour the pen. oil down the center of the chamber hole & into the cylinders.

It could have a lot of oil on top of a piston open the decompression lever and try and turn it slowly as too give the oil a chance to get out if thats the problem. Good luck I have a 14a its a very good machine. Razz

Last night I pulled off the floor boards and took the cover and the timing pointer out and put a pry-bar in and was able to turn the engine. I turned it over about three full revolutions and had to quit for the night. Tonight I put in the starter, connected the batteries, and cranked it over while decompressioned to blow all of the excess fuel out of the cylinders. I decided that I had to see if this thing would run so I kicked out he decompression and cranked and cranked, I got nothing but white smoke. I gave it a sniff of either and it began to run, very rough at first but cleared up after a bit. I have to change the oils and filters and check all of the fluids and then I will be ready to see if this thing will push any dirt. Thanks to everyone who posted especially Old Magnet for letting me know about the timing pointer access. If anyone has any other tips or tricks about this 14A I would appreciate it. Yup, that's a good one....before they started messing with them with things like the pony/main shared lube system. Does have the even fire pony, nothing wrong with that but it is a little different. (Both piston crank throws on same side w/big bolt on counterweight). Good luck with getting her going:D
