Hi, have a D6 9U that has always started good. Put it away last fall running but getting more warm than normal ( thought it was due to running on a steep slope and steam would belch out of the top of the radiator). I adusted the fan belt, cleaned out the radiator fins and scraped off the grease and dirt from the sides and bottom of motor to help cool.
And this spring, this is what it does. After warming in start I give it some throttle and switch to run. It puffs brown smoke and the stack cover opens up just like its going to take off and then flutters partially open but won't run. I normally use a shot of either to help out. When I give it the shot of either, no white smoke, no different puff and just the same brown smoke. If I give it more throttle, it races the main motor and the pony but still won't start and run. All the while brown smoke out the stack.
I have bled the filter housing, and each of the injector screws with no problem.
There is some slobbering of oil coming out of the stack above the turbos that I don't remember seeing, but I have never run the pony this long with out it starting.
What do I check for next?
Thanks

Check air cleaner for blockage. Seems like your getting fuel but not enough air (black/brown smoke). Is this a turbo unit? that's kinda rare.

Thank you. It is a turbo, I believe it has been added at some time and I will try to get it all apart and check for a blockage.
Thanks again for your reply.

Removing the air cleaner for a trial run would probably be the quickest. I'm assuming you have the oil bath unit which tend to load up the filter media in the upper section over time but it was also common to convert to the dry type cartridge air cleaner, especially on turbo conversions. I have had trouble with critters crawling up through the prefilter fins and nesting in the dry type units so check it all out either way. Let us know how it checks out.

Old Magnet has you on the right track, I would suggest that new air filters mite be in order if you have the dry type unit. I would also remove the pre-cleaner and look down the air intake pipe to make sure you dont have a birds nest or something inside. Sounds like its getting fuel therefore this should solve your problem.
We have a turbo 9U as well with dry type air filters.

Hi Woody,
Got some questions for your turbo 9U.
Do you know the history of the unit?.....was the engine built for turbo application or was it a bolt on after market kit?
Any issues of reliability?
Thanks

OLd Magnet:
The turbo was supplied in a kit form from Western States Equipment cat dealer.
It was a nice clean conversion, quite a few of the parts are D6B in orgin, like the dry type air cleaner for example.
We have had no problems with realiblity, and it will pull as much in fouth gear now as it would in third before, therefore we gain a gear.
Some people say you should have the old cooled lines on the bottom of the pistons but we do not with this application.
We were trying to get the tractor to run a little closer to our D5SA in the field
and with the increased horsepower we were able to do that.
Bear in mind that no body but myself and my brother run the D6 and we are very mindfull of not over working it and are very service minded on the oil. We tend to change oil about every 100 hours. Oil flilters and grease are cheep compared to the cost of an overhall.
Let me know if you want more information on the turbo. we also had the fuel rack open up by our Western States mechanic. There are quite of few of these in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.

Hi Woody,
Thanks for the info.
I was wondering if it had the optional pistons. Also seems to be some folks that think it over stresses the lower end. I wondered if you had any bearing problems. I'm of the opinion that they are plenty beefy enough to handle the turbo boost but like any machine, there are limits of abuse. Sounds like you are treating her right:D
Is that the Garrett turbo??

check the fuel pressure, it may have lost its prime. I dont think that has been mentioned yet. The fuel pressure guage should at least flicker when the pony motor is cranking the main engine.

Thanks guys for all of the advice. I had to go out of area for a bit so I haven't been able to get back here. I checked for air restrictions...didn't find any. Turns out I had a problem with the pinion lever not adjusted right and not kicking out properly. Needless to say, got it started without any problems, just like last year!
It is great to have access to all of the knowledge here.
On a different note: the two grease zerts on the water pump of this D6, upper and lower, how much grease should go in there? I thought maybe I had heard that one was a relief or something???
Thanks again guys for all of your trouble, it is appreciated.
