They went in production in 1938 so yours probably is an early 40s tractor I,d guess. My SNID book only has start up times but others on here have books with the correct year it was made.

mkreh23,
5J9121 is a 1946. 5J 7843 TO 5J 9272

Manuals come up on E-Bay. Might be worth a try.

According to MB CAT's directory on ACME, it would be a 1946.

Manuals are available from CAT as reprints in 8.5 X 11 format.
"Caterpillar Legendary Service Literature
1-800-228-7821"

Also available as mostly poor quality reprints on ebay. Some are better than others.

The ebay reprints are mostly bad because of bad pictures, the text is ok and they are useful. I have some for the U series that aren't so bad, but the J series set I have didn't print well at all. Best of all is to keep a lookout for original manuals on ebay and in the For Sale/wanted section of this board.

You will want a parts book, the operators and maintenance manual, and maybe the serviceman's reference book for the tractor and the one for the D3400 engine (2 different books).

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
