Now I got problems .I took the D4D 84J apart thinking steering clutches were bad.So I took them down to Western State. They say the clutch pack measures out to be fine.So now what can cause my promblem.Seems to me now that I think about it.If the clutches for steering was bad on one side. It would want to go in circles.Instead it does not want to steer to the right at all.Going forward that is.Steers in reverse thou.So my question is whats keeping the clutch from disengaging?You guys got any ideas ?I'm scratching my head on this one.

Check the steering clutch release bearings. Also linkage for excess wear.

how a bearing would do this? did anyone disassemble your clutches? have your clutch
teeth worn into your drive hub and brake drum thus not releasing in forward? when you
hit reverse you back the teeth out of their groove letting the clutches release.

Apparently you have oil soaked brake system
ther is washing procedure system
But from personal experience in old system does not work
You already decomposed system
Clean with steam .spray washers side without dismantling

It is recommended to replace all three parts of the brake on each side
They are soaked whit oil and grease and can not clean well

Check the grease pipes
Everything has been taken apart so replacement is easy
Make sure the instruction direction Kroner location

If your dozer is running in circle you should have a broken pinion or flange pinion teeths stripp or stering cluch hub teeths stripp

During rotation in addition to disconnect the power transfer
You must stop the rotation.
When the brakes oil sponges
and the steering clutch is Full with grease
Although the transfer of power disconnection
Grease continues to press the power transfer system

If the brake system was properly
Holds a rotating side
The tractor was spinning.
But the brakes are weak.
Therefore there is no rotation.

Western States has pulled down the whole assemble.They said it does not look like there is a problem with clutch pack.Then I noticed the worn jagged edges in drive hub.(tappered or wedge shape groves ) Those groves looked to be made by the clutch steel .Not the bands that have the pointed notches that fit into the brake drum.When I ask they said that was normal wear.So I also thought of the theory of the groves causing my problems.Service writer seemed to agree.I'm on the hunt for some good used drive hubs.The brakes have been mentioned also which we are replacing.It's funny thou the left side drums wore bad and the shoe liner has came apart ,but it steers to the left.So little more information for you guys to roll around.Thanks again for the help.Trying to save $$$$ ,but want it done right.This crawler only sees about 100 hours of use a year.Thanks again Blaine

If things truely are oil soaked as stated, now would be a good time to change the seals on the final drive pinion flanges.

Can't tell if your getting good advice from Western States or not?????

Is also a possibility before starting to dismantle
Open all lids
Spraying degreaser material directly on the brake drums

on this top shaft cage when it is pulled out will the bearing in the outer final drive cover come with it or does the sprocket & cover need to be pulled to get at it?
