Hi Sam,

I knew when I seen that on YT it wouldn't last long, glad it found a good home. That is the one in Waterloo, right? John

Did you say Illinois? And you want direct electric start? Are you sure? It sorta gets cold enough in Illinois to freeze the nuts off that Cat, doesn't it?

I have pony starters on both of my Cats and would have it no other way, and it doesn't get cold here anything like the midwest states. And those batteries cost a bunch. I'd sure fix up the pony if it's fixable if it were mine.

Anyway, it looks like it has good possibilities. Best of luck,

Jack

Ag-mike,
Not unusual to see damaged/broken quadrants in the linkage. There is a severe bending component to their operation (watch them bow out when under a load) that only gets worse with wear and hard usage. Not really a good design, just the best Cat could do as an afterthought.

Dad and I had originally thought about direct electric for the diesel, but since learned that might not be the easiest box of parts to find: starter, flywheel housing, generator, batteries and box, etc. Probably will just stick a starter on the pony. Besides, two engines are better than one, right? :D

Yes, this was the tractor in Waterloo. He said he had a couple others interested...anyone here?

Hours: I laughed my butt off when dad called back "Uh, well, I found a 7 after the three 6's, so maybe it has a few more hours than I thought." 6667 total hours...we'll see if the meter works tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments, Lee. I found a 930 with a ripper on the side of the road, my last trip to Tucson. That's the only real one I've found to match the toy!!! I'm going to look in the archives for some pictures and a spec sheet.

Tomorrow's the day to get her running. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for all the help!!

Aw shucks y-map, at 6700 hours she is just getting broke in!! ;) I have been pretty fortunate to have ponies that have been trouble free on the D4-7U and the 112. Nothing like hearing the cackle of the pony as it turns the main on a crisp morning. You'll enjoy the critter for many years!!

Here is a shot of my D4 today doing some work around a windmill so that I can put in a new concrete tank. It was made in 1950.

Nics pics of the D4 at work, Jim!

I've included a couple of shots from today: How to unload a crawler (one way, at least), and What's Under the Grease.

Soooo, we washed her, drained fuel, drained the oil and refilled, changed fuel filters, and cleaned out the 17 years of wasp nests from the intake.
Pulled with the decomp on, oil pressure "Check."
Put compression on, pulled 50' more to get fuel pressure "Check."
Added a little throttle "Pop, pop, purrrrrrr."

Literally, about 5 feet of pulling with throttle and she fired off like it was yesterday.

Steering clutches all good, brakes good, main clutch good, hydraulics good, we're in business!! Tomorrow is cleaning the gas tank, filing the points, new plugs, new fuel filter, and an exasperating afternoon pulling on the rope start! ;)

Let's see if this link works, it should be a movie of her running.

That is great Y-Map!! Looks like you have a diamond in the rough there!! You must have done everything right changing the fuel filters as the old Cats can be a little tempermental getting them started after changing the fuel filters. Sounds great!! Keep the pictures coming!!

One of the best things I did was to install a small inline fuel filter in the line to the pony. I have never had any problems with the pony carb but I have had to replace the inline filter from time to time. Seems like no matter how well one cleans the pony tank, it always seems to get gunk in it. Best of luck!! :)
