Hi there,my mate Sprocket has a 1944 D8R serial number 6718.The combustion chambers do not have any flats to insert a combustion tool.I think that the very early engines chambers were press fit and retained by the injector clamp.I am not 100% sure. Can anyone advise us.
Thanks
Martyn

You are mostly correct. The early combustion chambers were pressed/driven in place. The two stud bolting arrangement was to retain the injector. Cat had the tooling to pull these chambers which consisted of a pulling shaft, nut and saddle which could be used manually or with a hydraulic puller.
I can't tell from the tooling picture but the pulling shaft must thread into something or maybe use a collet system.

Those old tall nozzles were held down in by two studs & nuts on each side of the chamber bore on the top outside of the head. Boy it seems those old chambers had threads on the top inside edge of them if I remember & there was a puller that you threaded the center puller bolt down into those chamber threads & the puller set down over the two studs that held the nozzles in & that way you pulled the chambers loose from down in the the head. It,s been so many years since I worked on one but I believe that,s the type you have & how you get them out.

Don,t have a picture but they have a metal washer (gasket) at the bottom & an "O" ring seal at the top.

This shows the cross section but cylinder heads after 2501 had water deflectors, otherwise the same.
