Good morning,
Can anyone tell me a trick for removing the bronze bushings from the bottom roller bearing housings on a D2 5U? I tried the old pilot bearing hydraulic trick but the old bushings are so obround my piston/driver won't seal. Peeled one out with a pneumatic chisel; maybe that's the best way.
Thanks. Packrat

What about blowing/melting them out with a torch?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Packrat, why not grab the bushing housing in a lathe (or mill), bore the bushing back to round condition and then use the hydraulic method? A little more work upfront, but probably worth it. Would make it happen.

Good Morning,
Thanks for the replies. I put them in my lathe and turned them almost thru and they peel out real easy. Cat cannot supply the 2H1988 bushing so I am having them made by one of my business's suppliers. I could not match them up with an off-the-shelf bushing. Packrat

Hi,
Currently doing the same thing with my D2. My local Cat dealer said the bushings were indeed available and gave me a price of about $45.00 EA ($720.00 for all 16). Anyway, not excited about spending that much money, I bought enough bronze hollowbar for about $110.00. Once the outside and inside is turned to the correct dimensions, the only tricky part will be machining the lubrication groove. As for removing the old ones, same problems here. There was some clearence between the bottom of the old bushing and the bottom of the hub. Tried putting some heat to the hub and using a slide hammer with the jaws hooked in the small amount of space...but no luck. As for burning them out, I was skeptical about pouring that much heat to the hub. Finally resorted to the sawzall. Just had to be careful that I didn't cut too far through the bushing and into the hub...it takes patience.

I used a socket that is the same size as the bush and tapped them out.I did not damage any and fitted them to j series rollers. They came out fairly easy.
