I guess we never mentioned it but the D3400 is a pretty common engine used in the D2 "J' series tractors and "212" model motor graders and other "industrial" and "marine" applications of the same 1938 - 1947 era.
It's just the marine adaption accessories that make this engine model option unique.

So a marine engine built in 1943 seems like a safe bet this gen set was put together for the Navy and would have come on the civilian market as surplus after WW2?
