D4 Magneto timing to Pony

This is 1946 D4 5T so it has the flywheel timing mark down the plug hole plug. ( not on the flywheel as per later years ). I see two mark come up. "M/W" and 180o opposite a "0" comes up. I used the air rush coming out of the LH pot drain to guess TDC - so does that mean "M/W" is timing mark for mag ?

Ol Grump told in a post last may to find an "M' on my magneto. I have whited out a well hidden "V" on the mag gear. ( maybe that is actually an M ) Was damn hard to see. Seems to be an "I" also at another timing mark.

I had my mag serviced and I do get spark on both side when spun on the bench. The book shows better timing marks that what I can see on the mag. I see none on the body. See my pics ( the pencil marks I think happened in the workshop ). Still no interest in firing over. I know the rotor is keyed ( at it does look roughly correct as aiming at about 8 o'clock direction, but is the cog wheel on the mag keyed ( that you offer into the pony ). Could that be slightly out.

I do not have these clear marks on my magneto as per my book ( see pic )

Thank you - going insane

You could be out of time by one tooth one way or the other quite easily. Check to see that the points are beginning to open as you rotate the flywheel just past the "MAG" mark.

My method of timing 'em is to give each spark plug hole a sniff of ether, replace the plugs, pull the rope and see if it barks. If no pop, pull the mag loose and turn it one way or the other one tooth and try again. Also, try switching the plug wires at the mag each time you try this. If they're 180° out, it'll never fire.

These are the mag timing marks for the 5T pony flywheel.

Your "V" is actually an "A". When the flywheel timing marks line up, the "A" is in correct position like you show and the rotor is at the approximate 8 o'clock position as you show, the points just barely opening after adjusting for maximum of 0.014 - 0.018 everything is set on the front side.

On the back side (in the pipe plug hole) the M/W marks should match.

Your "0" is actually a "C". The "C" is the timing mark to match the pony crank gear timing. The "180" so the that the "C" marks get aligned correctly.

With everything set, mount the mag to the manifold, keeping everything in alignment.

Go easy on the ether for the pony motor. I learned the hard way. On my D8 14A, I was in a hurry to start it and I gave the pony motor a sniff of ether. When I hit the starter button, the pony motor kicked backwards and it blew the starting bendix of the electric starter to pieces. Not counting down time, that was an expensive day for me at the NC Machinery parts counter.:( If I have to, for the pony motor, I will use WD 40 or a squirt of gasoline to start up the pony motor. I save the ether for the diesel engine.

Thanks guys, I have used all that advice and some I took from my old magneto repair guy. My manuals have 5T dsl advice ok , but seem newer for the pony. Maybe my pony set up differs being export to Australia?

The mag is American Bosch. I was hung up on the timing marks inside the cover , but I now see the M on the rear cog that meets the pony flywheel. I have marked it and have that pic. Ol Magnet the other pic is my pull wheel which has no reference marks. Can only use the down square plug hole M/W marks. Old grump I will do a NASA count down in your honor before I crank with pots full of av gas. No I will use gasoline as I love that idea to test spark without worrying about carby issues at the same time.

Will let you know how it goes.

hello auscuscus ,looking at your first pic you will need to take the cover of the front on the pilot engine ,if you look at Old Magnet black and white pic, the mark is on the back edge of the fly wheel behind the cover on your engine ,bruce oz

According to the world news it looks like you are getting a heat wave down there in Australia. The southern part showed well over a 100 degrees yesterday on the news. Here in NE Pa.we have been having some cold weather and getting up in the high 20s in the day and lower teens or a little lower at night. It showed this morning that the next week or so it would get in the higher 30s and lower 40s but cold at night yet.Even Florida has had a freeze and was hard on the fruit crop. Western USA has had it share of snow but here in NE Pa. it has been fairly light for the season but just the cold weather.

You probably can't see the marks well anyways cause of the dash.

Here are some pics of the timing marks on the flywheel and cover.

I couldn't get a better pic of the marks on the flywheel. But you can see them and get the idea.

The early flywheels have the timing mark on the inside small diameter flange.
