We're close to the point of reassembling the engine for the 12E grader 99E11673. The pump has been mostly open to the weather for several years (the injector lines were left on the pump, but the nuts were loose so I'm sure water got in there anyway). We wanted to send it out to be checked and cleaned up as necessary without spending a bundle on it.
The pump shop says CAT Inc isn't very forthcoming on specs for injection pumps, so does anyone have any useful information about setting one of these up for this grader engine?

If I were you I,d just call your dealer & I,m sure if they are any kind of a business they,d give it to you.If the rack was not moved I,d say it would be ok. As for the pumps if the spacers are kept with the hole they came out of it should be close enough.I don,t have any books here on the specs but have set up dozens of them. They would be in a rack setting book for the rack & the lifter setting should be in the servicemans referance book.

I have the service manual for the D333 and the rack setting specs but you will need the Cat tooling 8M530 (rack setting micrometer), the 2M5219 (gauge spacer) for setting the pump lift plus a regular 4-5 in depth micrometer to do any setup adjustments. Also suggests special wrench and extractor for removing the injection pumps.

I forgot to mention that it takes a special tool to set (check) the rack & also a special tool to go down inside where the pumps go to check the lifter setting with depth mikes. It is a round piece of stock about 1 1/4" diameter or so & is 2" long & a hole through the middle for the depth mike stem to go down through.

Hi ccjersy,
the ON ENGINE lifter setting, with the engine at TDC firing stroke for the respective cylinder, for 99E8436 & up is 4.226" + or - 0.002" using the 2M5219 Gauge Grp., as OM and SJ said. The rack setting is + 0.085" using the 8M0530 rack setting micrometer, which fits in the front opening of the pump drive extension housing, remove a little plate with 2 bolts to access the opening.
The Rack setting Book I have also says if you use the earlier tooling P/No 1M6953 gauge and depth micrometer subtract 1" from the given rack setting measurement, for the life of me I can't think what the 1M6953 tooling looks like, I am sure I have only ever used the 2M5219 tooling.
When I queried some outside fuel inj. shops, when testing their rebuilt pumps, if they had the Cat tooling they usually said NO. I soon found they just kept everything in exact order and position when dismantling and re assembling the unit, the exact advice given by sj.
Be sure to have the seats, spacers, plungers and barrels, and bonnets etc. scrupiously clean when doing all this as dirt or lint on the seats damages them and allows fuel leakage and therefore fuel dilution in the sump, also causes other problems with settings, sticky rack etc, etc.
You will also need the special external splined socket to R&R the pump assembly retaining nuts.
Hope this helps and not confuses.
Regards Eddie B.
