I've been looking for a D2 with blade and found one advertised not to far from home. But he says he loaned it to a friend and when he got it back steering one side not working. My question would be what might be wrong, what to look for and how to fix

Could be an adjustment or the steering clutches could be stuck or worn out, two different symptoms.

If it is not pulling on one side, (you pull the opposite side steering clutch lever, and the tractor stops), that could be needing to adjust the free travel back to 3" on the steering clutch lever, linkage could be stuck, but probably the steering clutch pack is worn out or something broke in that side/final drive. You would hear/feel clunking maybe and find metal in the drain plug of the final drive if it's the gears.

If the clutch on one side will not disengage to allow you to turn to that side, the clutch lever adjustment could be too loose, linkage could be broken, throwout bearing could be gone or most likely the clutch pack is frozen up. These stuck clutches can sometimes be adjusted up tight (no free travel) and the tractor butted up against something big and heavy with the clutch held back to attempt to slip the clutch pack.

Which is it?

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

CC this brings back a joke I heard years ago & it goes "Blessed Are They Who Go Around In Circle For They Shall Be Known As Big Wheels".Well if he tries your suggestion he should possibly pin down the problem with the steering.

SJ----"Blessed Are They Who Go Around In Circle For They Shall Be Known As Big Wheels".

I've been running in circles for so long----that now ever time I come by a dog, the dog hikes his leg and tries to "hose off" my leg (and I don't have a wooden leg). Must be some truth to your statement.:D

I did have an older friend (WWII vet) with a wooden leg----Walter always claimed he had to be careful around dogs.

Excuse me for posting off topic material within a legitimate post----but dogs were mentioned here and dogs chase Cats----so we are now back on topic.;)
