Hello Catskinner,
I would say that it is certainly a jib crane of some sort or another, you will note that it is attatched to the tractor track frames via another trunnion, and obviously operated from the No 25 CAT Cable Control.
Sincere regards

What is the device on the rear of this D8 that is sticking up in the air?
Catskinner,
It’s with out any doubt some type of rear mounted crane, used for hosting or pulling some form of a sauerman (slusher) bucket in the use of some construction work.
The tractor is mounted up with an LeTourneau dozer and over head gantry. That particular hook-up used the LeTourneau model “T” double drum power control unit, but in some cases the model “R8” was used which was a double drum.. more of a heavy duty unit. so my money is on one or the other of those two units.
LeTourneau built what was know as a Tractor Crane that was mounted on wheels and was pulled by the tractor. But it wouldn’t surprise me at least, that someone rigged up a rear mounted one. It almost looks like something that was built by LaPlant-Choate, but I doubt it…probably shop built.

I've seen those with the wheels mounted for a crane. I never thought of this as that. I forgot to mention that this is one of the pics. from the Corps of Engineers file at Kanopolis Dam SW of Salina, KS. when they were building the lake in the 40"s. I have many more and some more to ask questions about. Thank you for the answers. Are there any more answers? catskinner
