A friend of mine has a D 2 that stops dead in its tracks when the right cutting clutch is pulled. I told him not to worry, he just has one of those D2's that came from the factory with 2 master clutches. But really, the only thing I could think to tell him was possibly the left side steering clutch had enough broken springs that it could not propel the tractor when the right clutch was activated, but did have enough unbroken springs to help propel the tractor when both sides were pulling. Does this make sense?
Any help appreciated.

Did it have free travel in the steering clutch lever on the bad side? If so, then the discs may just be worn too much so that the drums bottom out and no longer compress the discs properly. Probably like you say, it's worn to the point it will help, but not pull.
I don't remember anyone on here mentioning broken springs, some have cut them to get the locks off and disassemble a swollen clutch pak.

Is there much noise when he pulls the right clutch? Does it drive straight most of the time, or does it want to turn in a circle? He could have a snapped cross-shaft, shorn splines, or teeth gone off a pinion gear, if it doesn't drive straight when both steering clutches are engaged. If it's driving straight enough, with both clutches engaged, the problem could be poor adjustment making the clutch plates slip, or they are just plain worn out.

I suspect excessive slop in the cross shaft bearings. See if when one clutch is pulled if free travel decreases in the other lever. This is not a good situation and will take major work to fix. It may be possible to get by for a while by increasing free travel in the adjustments.
