removing the steering clutches from my recently purchased D-4 7U..and need to dis-assembly and put in new discs...according the cat sericemans reference manual page 71 it shows a special tools needed to remove the disc pack from the shaft..and a special tool to remove the steering clutch springs..has any one done this without using these special tools...or I am going to have to go to my local cat dealer to have this done..
..I did a search on the subject on this forum, but I didnt get any answers....

I never use a CATERPILLAR tool I made home plate and with a long bolts with tread I compressed the spring and removed the lock and decompressed the springs.

I have used a valve spring compressor to remove springs, the kind that is like a large C clamp.

thanks...I guess I will come up with something..I have a valve spring compressor the C-shape kind..once I get them out will try it..or make a plate with the long bolts...

I made up a small plate that bolted to an 18" Bessey clamp I already had. If you do use a c-clamp, have another one to hold the unit to a table. The hardest part was getting the keepers out. .a small screwdriver and magnet did the trick.
I thought I'd saved the pics from when I tore into my D4. .but apparently not.
