In my experience, yes you could have heating problems. The 343/ 1693 engine was one tough old brute but they all are susceptible to problems if you just crank up the fuel. If you changed all the components over to the 400 hp spec you would probably be okay ie;turbo, nozzles, maybe pistons. Don't know what it is in but they may not even be an option.Depending how hard you are going to work it also plays a big factor. I would install a pyrometer so you can monitor exhaust temp as well as water. If she gets too hot you'll start cracking piston crowns and those engine are almost cost prohibitive to overhaul. The last one I had any dealings with was in a 71' Kenworth. After a little over 2 million miles, they wore it out for the last time. They swapped it out for a 400hp 3406B, stretched the frame, and made a motor home out of it. Yellow cab with black fenders and body. Enough to make you drool. Hope this helps.

G'day Earthworm,
If you would like specs for a 400 hp D343 which were in the old 631b scapers I could help ya out there. The later ones ran a compact fuel pump but no aftercooling from what I recall.
cheers djcat.

As Toolbox said you could run in heating problems but it also depends on how much & how long a period you are using that extra HP. If it,s just intermittent that your using the extra power you could possibly get by but if the extra power is used for a extended time then I,m sure you would have a surge in heat buildup.By burning more fuel then it will create more heat not only to the coolant but the turbo exhaust heat. After cooling makes the air more dense so more air can be packed into the cylinders for more power buildup.
