Ken, yes, thank you, the PTO arrived at Jim's a day before I arrived. Very fancy box it was shipped in, too! Thanks.
Miked238; it was much warmer where you were than in Orchard, Iowa. I plowed on Thursday and Friday, and neither day warmed up to 30 degrees F. (I.e., it did not get up to freezing.) The soil was frosting up, and finally it was not accepting the plows. Then Friday night it snowed, and we called a halt to the proceedings until next year.
Firecat, I am not a farmer, and in fact, this is the first time in my whole life I have plowed with a trailing ag plow (I've "plowed" using a blade on the front of tractors before). I have no idea what the differences between soil, stubble, and chisel plows are. Maybe someone here can enlighten me.
The two plows we used were no newer than the 1950s. The four bottom plow that broke (probably hit a rock with it) was a 1950s Case BH series 4-bottom plow. It would be handy to have a parts book to show how it should be assembled, as after the broken part was replaced, it didn't seem to be working just right. Is there any on-line source of info for old plows? I think the 2-bottom plow was a JD.
I forgot to mention that we also plowed with a Diesel Fifty (right hand drive) to give it exercise. The Diesel Seventy-Five was brought out and idled some, but time ran out to give it the kind of exercise it needed. Ditto my Diesel Thirty-Five.
Willie, if I wasn't so worn out from my trip to Iowa, and soon to leave on a holiday trip, I'd love to come out and plow or whatever for you. Gee, I don't get those invitations very often!
Gauntjoh, yes indeed, I enjoyed operating the equipment very much!
Razz, if you send me your contact info by private message, I will be sure to visit next spring when I am out to Jim's.
I hope you all enjoy the photos I posted more recently (Friday after Thanksgiving) of some equipment in Jim's yard. Also take a look in the For Sale area of the bb to see other tractors and equipment he has for sale.
