This D2 had an old style hydraulic unit that is piped on both sides of the unit (ref pics). I have a CAT 44 hydraulic unit off of a 5J D2, is it possible to interchange to install the CAT 44 onto the 3J?

The major difference between the J models was the track width and that shouldn't make any difference as far as changing the hydraulic unit. All through the models, Cat updated various things as time went on, but unless there's a major difference between front pulleys (which I doubt) this ought to be an easy swap.

There must be something wrong with that hydraulic unit you pictured? I always thought the pipes down each side looked better, but I guess it would make it impossible to have the diverter arrangement for rear outlets etc like the later ones had back at the firewall.
Any idea of the model of the 4W series pictured? Early #44? I have an operator's book listing 6W, 7W, 8W and 9W, all #44's.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

hello ,the 4w is from 1955 for the 44 HYD. CONTROL FOR D2 TRACTOR and also used in 1963 for the 44 HYDRAULIC CONTROL.
you can get anything to fit ,just have to make new brakets and gaurds to hold it on

The 4W was the beginning model of the #44 series. Not sure exactly when it came out but I have it listed in a 1953 printed Parts Book. I would guess about 1950 introduction. The PB shows installation listing back to J1 model D2's, 4G D4's and R model D6's.

The Caterpillar 4W series #44 hydraulic control was released in 1947. Genuine Cat blades for the bigger tractors, teamed with the #46 hyd control, appeared in early 1946.
