Need advice, looking at D7 and have some concerns.

Hello everyone, I am looking at a D7 serial number 47A1386 or 1356 I believe is the correct serial number. The machine has been sitting for 5-6 years. The owner states it was running great when parked, but due to losing his trusted helper he did not run it anymore as he is getting up there in age. The machine seems to be priced very reasonable, is in overall good condition (under a shed) and has like new undercarriage other than track pads but they still have a lot of life left as well. It has a winch on the back but I would need to convert to a root plow. However, upon inspection I noticed a few things that worry me.

1. I checked the oil in the diesel engine and it was overfill on the dipstick about an inch and smelled like diesel. Could this be as simple as the transfer pump seal or is it likely the injection pump or something else?

2. The pony motor oil is milky and overfull as well. I’m hoping it’s just from condensation but worried it may be head gasket or worse.

3. The pony carb is in rough shape. It has had the butterfly plates brazed on over top of the screws, shafts have a lot of play in the housing, and there appears to be an adjustment screw broken out of the housing. I will attach pictures. I found a refurb carb online but it’s $700 😳. If I purchase the machine it would get converted to electric start (South Texas so rarely cold starts) so hard to justify spending that to get it running.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Welcome: It could be fuel in crankcase, however you check the oil level with engine running. Oil level should be above the mark when not running.
Pony oil yes on condensation. Not clear about ease of changing head gaskets on the 339 pony.
Have fun and good luck. I have owned several D7E's here, all reliable machines. JM

Thanks! So I’m planning on changing the engine oil and pony motor oil before trying to start either. Should I just not worry about the diesel smell and milky pony oil until after I do that and run it for a bit then let it sit and see if they show signs of a leak again?

Also I would’ve thought if the pony got condensation in it that the diesel engine would’ve also? Another thing I just thought of, the radiator did not have any visible coolant at the top of it when I checked the coolant level.
