Nice clean 9U. Here in eastern Washington farm country the dry (D5 style) air cleaner was adapted onto almost all tractors it seems. Much easier to service. All of the turboed 9U’s I have looked at have dry air cleaners. Around here there are to many of them to make them rare but early tractors do have some differences and yours looks original enough to make me feel like it should be preserved as well as you can, but these were built to be used and normal use is not going to hurt it’s value in my opinion. Enjoy your tractor, Mike

Certainly a lot of them in our area definitely the right tools for the job on the endless acres of agricultural lands. Thanks for the insight Mike
I’m not really speaking to monetary value too much I have no intention of selling for money. I think of preserving for the guys like acmoc guys who spend hundreds of hours on their machines to repair and restore and watch a guy treat one like shit I’d be ashamed. 🫣🤔🤨
Also I’m look to leave as much weight behind for my three boys to haul out and deal with as possible. I never pass on rusty chains at yard sale “how much for all of em”. I think I can get to 200 ton for those boys to deal with and watch from afar in joy watching them struggle. He who dies with the most flannel’s and chains wins.

Just a quick photo of an 8U in the run down melon shed. Note the air cleaner. JM

Now that you bring up Bruce, I think he has 9u 100, or very close to 100. It had a turbo added which he removed. I sent him some of the early fenders to replace the latter heavy ones. So it should as close to original as he could get it.
Many different things have been done to the air cleaners. I have had 4 running 9u's and each has a different air cleaner mount. One being original oil bath,2 having the latter Cat dry unit one on homemade pipe one genuine Cat pipe, one super sized dry unit that could be meant more for a D7 or maybe a D8 even. Turns out that was kind of a mark that the one old time mechanic in the area put on any he had goosed the fuel pump on.

Good looking tractors one and all. I’ve got 9U 17. It had been modified quite a bit. DE starting, D6B fuel tank, heavy fenders, oil clutch, turbo(which was a hack job). I decided to go take it back to its mostly original state. I did leave the oil clutch, although I had to change clutch housings to put a starting engine back on. It needs undercarriage badly, but for now it’s as good as it’s going to get.
Here are a few pictures. Sorry I don’t have any close ups at the moment.

NWallace I am thinking that you may be located in eastern Washington? I see the one manual is from Strohmaier in Lind. I am down by Colfax. Lots of 9U’s around but very few that are very close to being original like yours appears to be. I have a few but only last year was I able to get one home that had not been turboed. It was still modified to have a dry air cleaner and had a cab added. Slowly working to get it running and back to near original operating condition. Mike

Yes I’m in Spokane nine mile area actually. Stromaier is who sold me the d6’s from his machine shop in Lind. Definitely know your business. Blake sold me the tractors but mentioned was his father’s actually. By the looks his father must have love it. He obviously cared greatly for it. I pass through colfax time to time going to Pullman for deliveries. Not my favorite town to pass through but that zips does ok.
