Twenty Two giving me the runaround!

Hello all. Been a member since early 2024. 1st time posting. I’ve got a 2F Twenty two giving me fits. Bought it early this year. Started just fine (even in the cold) 2-4 pulls and she was running. Started it up a few times between spring and summer. Anyway…this summer I started tearing it down (sheet metal) to start restoring. After it sat in the shed a few weeks I went to start it and she wouldn’t hit a lick. Checked the usual….spark, fuel etc. but nothing. Messed with it off and on for a couple months with no success. So tonight I went out. Put some fuel in the priming cups, gave it half choke and she fired right up lol   Let it run for 10 minutes or so, waited another 15 minutes and she fired up again. I bought some Autolite plugs for it so after the second start-up I put the new plugs in (old ones were pretty rough looking). Went to start it up and wouldn’t you know it….nothing. It tried to start 1 time but that’s it. Figured maybe I flooded it…let it sit for a few hours and still, won’t hit a lick. I will add I’m not running a fuel pump…just gravity feed. But it’s getting fuel.

🤔 I'd say start by checking your connections at major ground points. A bad coil can give a person fits. A bad coil can work then not and randomly everything in between, At times they seem to work when cold an fail when hot, but they can do any thing. 🤔Condenser could be going bad. The points gap could be closing up (due to lack of lube on cam lobes and wearing the fiber on points) 🤔 Once I had a bad wire between the coil and distributor, it was so old the insulation went to dust once I touched it... So I'd say, double and triple check the wiring 🤔 Any moisture under the distributor cap? 🤔 While the distributor cap is off look for carbon trails and wipe clean the inside of the cap.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply!  Yeah I think I’m gonna break down and send this mag up to Maine and have it gone through. The condenser has been replaced in the past but that don’t mean it’s good. Wires all look good. I’ve cleaned the cap etc several times. I’ve been a diesel mechanic for 20 years, but I’m only 38…and my experience with mags is very limited. lol. I also got new plug wires for it, but havnt got around to swapping them yet.
