Can anyone tell me what direction, looking from pinion back to the brushes, this should rotate? I just had it rebuilt, and it’s not engaging the pony gear, I suspect it may have been wired to turn in the wrong direction.  Thanks in advance.

Rotation is counter clockwise when viewed from the drive end.

If it's turning correctly; Make sure there's enough room for the Bendix to move freely to engage the pulley gear. May take a little finessing when tightening the big bolt.

I cleaned and lightly oiled the shaft that the Bendix slides on on my 5U because it was reluctant to engage - it's good now

Cheers,

Thanks for replies, I’ve confirmed it is rotating in the correct direction, and the bendex is moving forward, but still no engagement with the flywheel. It was mechanically alligned with the receptor “bell housing” before I pulled it (one of the brushes broke), I’d hate to start monkeying with the bolt that allows you to adjust the housing relative to the gear, but I’m running out of ideas, any advice appreciated.

Does anyone know the part number for the bendix on this starter?

That starter drive was used on a bunch of applications, most common being for Flathead Fords.

Apologies for my lack of basic mechanical aptitude, question, looking into the pony motor as in the picture below, from the viewers perspective, should the ring gear rotate clockwise or counterclockwise.  Thanks in advance.

In that view with the starter turning counter clockwise the gear/pulley will be turning clockwise.

So if from this view if the ring gear is supposed to spin clockwise, than looking from the same view, with the starter installed, the bendix would be turning counter clockwise (looking from brush to bendix) and if I was able to climb inside and look from bendix to brush I would see the bendix rotating clockwise, is this correct?
