D4 7u pinions was created by Jimmy977
Hello folks,  I have one pinion removed from D4. After I removed steering clutch shaft I noticed pinion flange nut was loose. Lock was intact and correct looking, I was able to remove nut by hand. I removed flange by hand also. At this point pinion shaft had a little looseness. I would say I could grab shaft and rock it about 1/8"". This side was definitely a little loose compared to other side pinion, which I have not removed yet. Pinion and bearings look very good.  I think I am going to replace bearings anyway because it was loose, and because I have very little experience determining if a bearing needs replacement. My question is ton rating for pressing flange back on. Manual says 15 tons for pinion flange.  Manual also says 20 tons for steering clutches,  but lots of information saying press clutches 10 to 12 tons because clutches Crack- break at 20 tons. Should I go with 15 tons on pinion flange or less?

Hi Jimmy, I don't have specs for the D4 but for the D2, the flanges are specced to press on to 15 tons but I put mine on at a big over 10 tons, so I think they must be pretty similar to the D4's. I don't recall the nut torque but it wasn't anything special because the 10 ton press is what's holding it on. I'd say I probably didn't put it on any more than 80-100 ftlb. Really more of insurance just like the D2's sprocket nut is

Cheers,
