Hello folks,  I have everything loose on a D4 7u steering clutch shaft. I have taken the nuts and nut locks off bevel gear bolts. Bevel gear is free floating on shaft, bolts unable to completely remove, but are as loose as possible. The right brake drum is really stuck to steering clutch teeth.  But drum is free from pinion flange. With a small gap between flange and brake drum. So the bevel gear hits on the pinion to the left,  the drum just can't get enough clearance to pass over the pinion flange. The pinion and bevel really have a lot of backlash because I completely freed bevel from shaft. I have tried for several hours to get it to come out, it is very close to coming out but just can't make it. I have tried every angle I can come up with, no go. What are next steps for removal. I suspect it would be torch the drum in half?. I'm going to work on it more in the morning,  she if I can come up with anything else to get it out before I start cutting.  Anybody have any advice on how I should continue?:

If I'm understanding you correctly the drums need to be driven in towards ring gear so they clear the flanges to the final drives. With lifting straps around the bevel gear shaft you will need to rotate the bevel gear to unmesh it from the pinion as you lift. A pry bar works good for this

Crawleraddict I will try to get more spin on the bevel gear. I have transmission in neutral, before lifting I can easily spin shafts by hand, seems like it should just spin transmission shaft when lifting. I'm lifting with a Come-a-long, so easy to control upward pull. I have tried prying with bars every direction I can, big bearing adjusting nuts are loosened to get good side to side movements of shaft.

The only thing I can think of is to go back through and make sure all of the brake linkages are disconnected, something possibly hanging up. You should not have to consider cutting the drums to get it out. I recently did a steering clutch job on a machine that was rusted completely solid and it was very tight getting out. It took some patience but it came out.

Ok thanks. I have it so close to coming out. I have Both sides lifted about 3/4" above pinion flange, at that point I can still spin bevel gear with a pry bar, I do one more clic on Come-a-long and it starts to bind pinion gear. I have free movement on all brake brake bands. It's definitely binding between transmission pinion and pinion flange. I will keep trying.

One pinion flange is loose, I may be looking for a pinion.

The pinion nut on one side was very loose, came off with no tool. Also still has 8 disk clutch, I don't know what year they came out with 11 disc replacements. I'm kinda glad to see 8 disc's, I had planned to rebuild clutches regardless, so I'm glad I sort of have an excuse to do it besides taking it all apart just because of stuck clutches.
