I removed this filter/strainer and noticed one end has damage on the rubber seal.  Can I get a new one at Cat, or will I need to put a new seal on this one?

What grade or type of oil should I use when getting it back together?  Some literature I found said the assembly takes 3 1/2 gallons, is that correct?

This is the back cover of the OMI for the D2 4U & 5U tractors. There are many opinions on the best oil to use. You should use any good quality oil that is rated for use in diesel engines and of a weight suited for your climate.

Thanks. I was needing the hyd.oil requirements. I am going to use ISO 32 hydraulic oil, which I think is near 10 wt. motor oil used in the '50's. Is there another preference?

Also, is there a part number (or where to find it) for the hyd filter shown in the picture, or can it be cleaned and reused?

The OMI for NO. 44 hydraulic control used on your D2 5U calls for CO (Crankcase Oil.) I think ISO 32 is okay.

The filter is 2A5886, the o-ring 4F7390.
The parts books for the D2 5U and the NO. 44 hydraulic control are available in the ACMOC library. You have to be a "paying member" to access them.

I'm a paid up member and went to the library to look at the #44 hydraulic control info. I see you beat me to the info, but I discover the filter element is 2A 5886, but I don't know if I can find one. Can I clean the one I have and reuse it?

Don't reuse! The 2A5886 filter is still available from Caterpillar and aftermarket sources.

The most useful manuals are the OMIs. The ACMOC library already has the Operators Instructions for the NO. 44 hydraulic control. I'm currently 50% complete with scanning the OMI for the D2 4U & 5U tractors . I should be through with it and have it posted to the library next week. I suggest you read them both. They will save you time & money and keep you from making expensive mistakes.

That 2A 5886 filter seems to be the same as the fuel filters used in the D2. If so, not very sophisticated. I may even have one on hand. I'd rather find one like I removed with the metal outside cover. Have the part numbers changed over the years?
