I always wanted a Caterpillar since I was very young, and finally just got a D4 7U. It seems to run great. I used it for the first time for about 1/2 hour and it steamed from the radiator. The water pump leaks, and I will have to find a place to rebuild it. The temp gauge did not say it was overheating and the engine did not seem hot. I (carefully) opened the radiator cap, and the antifreeze was only warm. Where would be a good place to send the water pump to be rebuilt? I do not know anything about Caterpillars, and I am not very mechanical. My son and I do have about 20 antique John Deeres from 1936- 1959, but we are new to Caterpillars. Thanks in advance. Congrats on the new D4 Cat, that is a great model to own, I wonder if the thermostat is stuck closed, seems weird to see steam, yet coolant was only warm, there is a small bleed hole in those thermostats.
Cat Dealers should still have the parts, and brains to repair the pump, if you think it is beyond your skill set, if you get the correct parts book, and workshop book for that engine, you will find it is a pretty easy job.
Good luck
Mike

Who ever has got the Deere to run should be able to handle a Cat water pump. Join up here and get access to the Serviceman's Manual from the library here on the board.
