What should the fluid level, if any be in the surge tank of an HT4?

Thanks

Read through the no.44 manual and nothing stood out to me, maybe I missed it.

I would make sure you have enough to raise the loader all the way with the bucket curled. Then make sure there is a quart or so left in the surge tank to make sure it doesnt suck air. My guess is there isnt much extra room when fully curled and loader as deep as possible.

From the Installation and Operation instructions of the HT4 Traxcavator.

Completely raise and dump the bucket, remove the filler cap, check oil to see if it is visible in the filler strainer.

That only works for the regular #44 unit.
I have never seen any instructions for units with the surge tank. I was curious to note if anyone had other information. You don't want to fill the surge tank, maybe just some in the bottom.
There is a 1/4" pipe plug in the piping going to the surge tank that might be used for a fill level check but I haven't seen any instructions for that either.

That is the instructions for the HT4,  it does indicate doing the checking at the surge tank.

I tried that once, belched oil all over the engine.

It does seem like when the lift arms are up and the bucket dumped, you would want the surge tank to be almost empty.
