Are the guides loose or just the yokes.

Hi Mike,
The yokes came loose even after repairs to them. When Brad bought the D8K he was told(with some proof) that the tractor had only 1,100 hours on a engine "major overhaul."
Brad has found that the camshaft and lifters had never been replaced and that they were in terrible condition.
I hope to get by to Brad's shop in the next couple of weeks for an update.
Brad is busy with his other 'dozers and he's also waiting on a new camshaft. The owner of the cam he wants just left on a vacation for several weeks!
Brad said the cam is no longer available from Caterpillar.

Your friend's D342 block probably needs some machine work before he installs another cam. The guide bore in the block wears and the guide starts moving. The yokes are coming loose because they weren't meant to retain moving guides. That being said, the solution used to be to machine the guide bore in the block round and knurl the guide so that it fit tight upon reassembly. 25 years ago it was possible to find a mobile machinist. Not sure what's possible today. CAT may have had another solution to bring the block back into tolerance but I don't remember it if there was one. What I remember is the knurling process to tighten up the guide. It's sad that an engine with an 1100 hour major has this problem but all Brad can do now is sort it out and correct what needs correcting. He'll need specs to chart a path forward but it's been too long for me to be of any help here. His first step will be to check the guides for movement, pull them out and figure out which, if any, of the guide bores are out of round. Hope this gets you moving in the right direction.

Cat do make a repair sleeve to do this exact job. It's a 5p6513 sleeve. I have used them in the past.
The D8K's don't use the lock tabs that the H's used to hold down the cam follower sleeves. Loctite is your friend here.
cheers Djcat.

DJCat, would it be possible/practical to use the H-style lock tabs on the K though? Perhaps that's an option for him, in combination with Loctite

Cheers,

G'day Neil,
I don't think it would matter if you used locking tabs and loctite together. I think the main thing would be making sure the holes in the block are a nice fit for the cam follower barrels to sit in. If the holes have been worn from a loose follower barrel then retention could could be compromised.
Cheers Djcat
