I bet you could hear that equipment running a long way off! I think that old vintage logging machinery is very cool. That's one of the things that attracted me to my old Cat. I used to collect old chainsaws too.

Hi Neil,
I'd be very interested to see any pictures of the setup with the D8 and the spar if you had any. I know some of the history of the one I have but have never seen any pictures of them setup. The unit I have is indeed a very early 1H. The winch and tractor were separated many years ago and the tractor has been sat outside and neglected for a long time. Mechanically it's still in fair condition remarkably and although not running at this stage everything is still turning and free. It's not going to be an overnight change the oil and start it project, but I'd like to have it as a working unit within the next two years, considering my other commitments. It's not an easy project, but in my mind it's absolutely worth saving and restoring to a working example.
Here's a picture out of the manual of what I am working towards.

I'm pretty sure my brother has photos of that skid site that might include that tractor. I'll check what he has next week. I'd say that winch and the tractor it's attached to would be an excellent candidate for restoration due to the winch's rarity. If you set it up with a mini-spar at tractor day, I'd say it would be a drawcard
Cheers,
Neil

I have a truck with a 8V92 in it. I was referring to it when we were discussing engine oil. Those DD diesels require a low sulfur engine oil like Delo 100.
The RD4 last had a detergent oil rated CC. Going by the half used bottle under the seat. The CD rated diesel oil today has additives that hold everything in suspension, and are a good step up with the detergent additives. One misconception is that these detergent additives are something like detergent we wash our clothing with, but that is not the case at all. Totally different. It's more like metal compounds that combine with the dirt and carbon, and don't let them settle out of the oil so that when it's drained the dirt and contaminates leave the engine. That's my take, I could be wrong.

Neil,
That's my goal, to reunite the winch with the tractor and restore to working condition to be able to present it at local old equipment shows in my area. I've certainly never seen another one and have found very little, even just images on Google. I would love to have it presentable by next year, but that will probably be a stretch.
I will certainly endeavour to scan the manual, and some others I have, including LaPlant Choate, which might fill some gaps in the library when I get an opportunity.

I was talking to the fellow who don't know which motor a 070 Madill has in it.
DD wants low ash oil and low sulfur fuel.
DD also approved of a 15w-40 oil for cold weather .

r2d2 your interpretation of detergent oils is correct that is what the additives do is hold the soot etc in suspension so it can be trapped by the filter and the fines that the filter cant remove drain with the oil. hence why the say change oil when warm as the sediments have been suspended and you get more of it out with the oil. it also drains faster.
are you a star wars fan?
d8dude something to remeber you cant rush good work you know it just doesnt work, and one day you will getaroundtuit and the job will be done.

I am more of a bleep/bloop kind of guy. R2D2 can't talk, and neither can I, but we can communicate. The R2D2 name turned out kinda poetic as the 4G serial turned out to be a RD4 and most know 2+2=4.
On a more serious note, I have been looking at pictures of RD4's, and most have the early intake manifold without the pony motor exhaust feature, and I thought I have seen other later 4G D4 machines without it also.
On the left side of the engine, the fuel filter arrangement looks different. I couldn't find an hour meter, on my machine either.
Did Cat build machines with options, other than track gauge that you could order? The option list wasn't long with cars of that era, so I assume there wouldn't be many on a tractor at that time either.
