I have a D4d, 65J and the hydraulic track adjustment ram was pushed back during some track work and now wont move forward it is leaking around the bottom maybe under where the grease fitting is, would this be a busted seal if so could it be fixed or is it a very hard job also i can not manually move the idler i have always been able to just add an remove greese but i cant even porta power it forward "although it has been pushed back like 4"" is there anything there it could of gotton hung on ?? Does sound like a seal problem.....there is an "O" ring seal right at the flange faces between the hyd adjuster cylinder and the front idler push rod. This "O" ring can be replaced by separating the flanges (are the connecting bolts tight?) and pulling/pushing the idler forward. Usual service to the adjuster requires splitting the tracks but you might be able to change out that one "O" ring by pulling the idler forward.

Not being able to move the idler may be due to having it wedged in a normally untraveled area, miss-aligned or bent parts......there is nothing that would normally cause it to hang up.

I bought a 10 ton porta power to attemp to push it forward I took the covers off and figured I would push as close to the ram as posible or possible try the wedge between the spring bracket and ram
if I can get the idler to move forward I would be able to get about 3 inches without spliting the track, could any of the above cause more damage then good??
also I would like to get a good manual but im not sure what to look 4, Thanks

Jack, I think if you look at the recoil spring it will be humped up in the center, they usually are as the parts wear. Parts meaning the two ears on front pilot under the front stops/ anchors. Since the anchors are below center the spring wants to tip the front pilot downwards. This causes the pilot to grip the adjuster cyl's outer surface. I have had this happen many times on different machines when doing an undercarrage job. Any time I totaly collapse an adjuster I pump it back out a few shots to make sure it's free. Otherwise I can fix it when the track and tinware is off.
The bad news is I always had to take the spring and pilot out, bolt an adapter to the end of cyl and press it apart. I recomend you start by unbolting the front flange from cyl and try to pound the front of cyl downwards. Oil outer surface and try to get it to turn aswell. You might be lucky.

Something strange about D4D service manuals......there don't seem to be many of them. I could not find one listed in the Cat literature for the 65J model yet I have one that covers 49J, 59J, 60J, 65J, 69K, 82J, 83J, 97F. There does not appear to be an overall Form number and it is made up of assorted REGxxxxx and GEGxxxxx Form number sections in a yellow Service Manual binder.
