Someone asked if I had any experience with one of these beasts. Since some of you like playing in white stuff, I thought I would share. JM

Oh JM -
I only have a few hours - Yikes- hate to think how many - in one of those or it's cousins.
Where is she resting, basking in the warm sunshine?
That looks like a KLAUER SNO-GO on FWD Chasis, All wheel Drive, all wheel steer.
Picture is fuzzy but it looks like it has "sno-go" chains on the rt front tire too! Always used every other link on the side rails for cross links, HEAVY!
State of California had what we called "Standard" Gas engines, Climax K for the blower unit and either Waukesha or IHC for the truck.
HQ converted many to diesels - Detroit 6-53 for carrier and 12v-71 for the blower and reels instead of augers.
I will have to do some looking sometime if there is interest, I do not have many photos - was just all in a days work and routine. Hindsight is terrible, you look back and say WHY DID I NOT DO THAT!

I have obtained a few pictures that were copied from some that were taken from a dumpster!
This new generation has no idea what the crews went through that preceed them now!
These with the one exception are of US 40 East of Donner Summit, Donner Lake in view showing the route of US 40 to Truckee, Ca
1952 - one for the record books! "City of San Francisco" passenger train was stuck at Emigrant Gap in this storm.
I want to say OLD 40 was closed 28 straight days! Train stuck for 3 days. Hope my memory serves on those facts.
The picture labeled as 003 --- SnowBlast -- this one had twin cummins power - I want to say 335? for the blower, it did have a much larger radiator than original installed, and came from Caterpillar! Pushing the machine hard, it would tend to overheat. Air Clutch between the blower head and engine.
This was one of the machines I operated much later than this picture. The round glass is what was original in the machine, spun at very high rpm, thus no wipers.
This photo taken as a photo op with the "upper mgmt on running boards, no chains on machine in this photo either.
"Tomato" on the door - Department of Public Works - Division of Highways which is now CT (Caltrans).

ctsnowfighter. Reason: Post Script -- white scar on left in photo with the lake is "present day" Interstate 80

CTS: Unlike you, (haha) it is up in WA working still.
My friend Carl whom I had purchased #40 scraper from, has been clearing logging roads daily. He is a field mechanic by trade, but asked to clear the way so folks could keep on working in the woods. Said it is quite an enjoyable and peaceful job, only the humming of the Detroit Diesel converting fuel to music. Heheh. JM
