Hello wondering if anyone has any idea why it ran out of fuel. I went out to a normal day of running the cat, did the prechecks, fuel was at 25-26 gallons, started up fine went to put it in first gear and lost power and died on the spot. I then checked everything again once again fuel tank read 25-26 so pup started up, rolling over the diesel nothing coming out of the top of the fuel pump, shut down went to get more fuel and tools .. put fuel in 10 gallons more, bleed lines started up runs fine but why did it run out at 25 gallons?
please give me some input on where to look
thanks

Your fuel line and filter housing probably have crud in them. Try draining the filter housing and take off the fuel line and see if it runs full. The bypass valve is pretty easy to clean on a D8. With that much fuel in the tank if you remove the bleeder at the top of the filter housing it will probably refill by gravity, then you can bleed the pumps.

Hello Ive got a dw-10 if it sits it will crank fine and run about 10 minutes and run out of fuel ,then you can prime it and its fine after that , im thinking its sucking air a little or something .or some kids could have throwed something in your tank if it keeps cutting off .

Hello
Well got a chance to look at the fuel system today, I took off the fuel line just before the filter housing, runs out fast drained the fuel tank, look inside the tank looks clean.
But wondering if the filter elements would be clogged with crap or junk or just old age that it wouldn't pass fuel through them as the weight of the fuel came around 25 gals. couldn't push throught the elements? any thoughts?
thanks

One time at the Cat dealer where I worked an OTR truck was towed in for repairs and it stalled out on the highway.Well I tried bleeding the filters and no fuel coming from the tank so I kind of had a hunch that there was a reason so I took the fuel cap off the side fuel tank and looked down in there and to my surprise there I saw the glass off a flashlight that was blocking the outlet line from the tank to the pump.I removed it and primed the system and it fired right up so he was on his way in just a little while. All we could figure was someone had a light looking down in the tank to check for whatever reason and the screw on end of the light lens fell off and went down in there and I guess they thought it wouldn,t hurt anything but the driver found out soon by some one elses mistake.

Be nice to know what your fuel pressure is.
Took a brief look at the parts book and it doesn't appear that they had a pressure gage:confused:
Might be a good idea to plumb one in if you can.

I have fuel pressure because it has more than 25 gals in the tank it reads about 1/2 way on the gauge but when it was down around 25gals the gauge said it was out.

When's the last time you changed fuel filters.....appears as you say....pressure drop across filters is to high when less than 25 gal in tank.

Can you clean the filter elements or buy new ones? Can I get aftermarket elements?
Thank you for the advice

No, the old filters are not practical to clean.
Try a Wix # 33164....you will need 9 of them plus the gaskets you will need to get from Cat.
The Cat # for the filter replacement kit including 9 elements and gaskets is a 7B8263
