CAT part #s frustration

More

I am having difficulty in determining cat part #s on very old CAT parts boxes. For example, I am finding "TIMKEN" bearings in unopened  "CAT" boxes. I assume this is OK but what do I do with (for example) TIMKEN bearings from disintegrated "CAT" boxes with no #s left. For some of these bearings like "99600" BOWER tapered roller bearings approx. 10 in. Dia., or 222 BCA ball bearing approx 10 in. Dia.. These huge heavy bearings look very expensive. I don't know what to do with these. Also, what do I do when I find (as I did this morning) a box with partially legable # like "2B8240 Pinion"  or does it really say 2R8246? To find out I will need to open this unopened box. These crumbly old boxes disintegrate if opened, I don't see as I have any choice, I just hate to do it, Anyway, doe anybody know how to find part #s from say TIMKEN and where they fit what CATs. Also, Does anybody out there recognize the part # 2B8240 pinion or second guess 2R8246> Thanks.

I can't thank you enough. I have a major pile of no-number boxes.

a google search is your friend.
if you find the nsn aka national stock number you can find what other equipment was used by federal agencies that also used that part.
every part for every machine used the US military has a national stock number. its lead to some interesting stuff ups over the years by getting one number wrong or out of sequence a army base got a ships anchor rather than the bearing they actually wanted to order.

there was also a interchange chart covering hyatt and timken part number with cat part numbers.
and heres something else do you know the difference between 600242RS and 60024 bearings? abosulty nothing the difference is one has seals the other has had them removed. all bearing that can come with seals or shields are made that way factory you pay for someone at the distributor to pop the seals out and put them in a new packet.
so save money and buy sealed bearing and pop them out yourself.
