Hello, I have removed the engine from the clutch housing to replace the pilot bearing, the input shaft of the transmission has about a 1/4 inch of play up and down hardly any play front to back. I had a noise that I was pretty sure coming from the pilot bearing but wondered if the input shaft bearing is bad as well any input would be greatly appreciated thank you!

That's worn and needs to be replaced Clayton. Good news is it's pretty easy while you have the tractor split. Can't remember the exact sequence but I think you support the mainshaft and pull the bearing/input shaft out the front and replace the bearing and seal. It's the same bearing on the countershaft below it so you should check that one too

You are that far into the machine, make sure the other bearings in the trans are good and nothing has come loose that will cause you additonal teardown in the future.

Hello yes I will be checking pretty much everything I can while I have the engine split from the transmission. I have noticed that the brass collar I have part number 4B3504 has some play is it suppose to have some play to it? Mine seems rather loose and if the clutch was not engaged it would sit there and move around some? I appreciate the input Clayton.

Hi Clayton, that collar shouldn't flop around so if you want to, you can replace it. I can tell you that the clutch will feel much cleaner, snappier to use and I'm sure you won't regret replacing it. They're available new and used (Angelo has one). What I was told by John at General Gear is to keep the lube up to the collar, to minimize wear, so make sure that the oiling cup and tube are in good order
