I'll wager that red line probably gave him a clue : ) It's probably to enable alignment with the rotor gear.
Something that I've wondered about with the magnetos I've looked at is how it appears that the points are closed only for a short period, which "seems" counter to the way coil ignition works, where the points are normally closed and open only to collapse the primary circuit and induce the spark. I would have thought the magneto would have worked the same way but if so, it seems strange that the primary circuit would have such a short time to build before the points re-open. I obviously don't understand it so if someone has a simple explanation, that would be great. The cam profile in the picture above seems to have a much longer "dwell" (don't know if we can use that term with respect to a magneto) than the one on my D2
Cheers,
Neil

It's amazing sometimes how a problem can be hidden in plain sight. Now it's pointed out, looking back over your original photos it can be seen that the red line is in the wrong place and the plate is reversed. It's so easy to miss the simplest of problems at times. I wonder how many sets of eyes looked at your original post and never noticed, I know mine certainly did not notice at the time.
Great to see you got it sorted anyway.

Hi all, thanks a lot for the replies. I hadnt even noticed the red mark myself until neil pointed it out! The mag man maintains that he found it upside down so thats the way he put it back together ; ) would be nice to get her up & running but as you can see in my RD7 rad busted thread, I have more problems..

I also see a replacement capacitor mounted near the magneto grounding stud. How is that working out for you and what uF capacitance are you using?
