D4 pony carb bowl setting

HI all, refurbishing my buddy's D4 pony carb with a kit from MacDonald. I wanted comments on folks' experiences with float valve setting. The instructions in the kit say bottom of plastic float to be 1 1/8" from the bowl cover surface +/- 3/64. I set it to that but it floods. Where it was previously was considerably lower, more like 1 5/16 to 3/8. It did run with that "wrong" setting although my buddy thought it starved some.
Have folks found that the 1 1/8" is just too high? Perhaps MacDonald are basing their instructions on a different float. This carb has the black plastic(?) float with the flat sides/bottom.
I'm going to set it up on my 3J's pony in the garage where I have good access to it to adjust ( the HT4 has poor access - those designers needed to be "encouraged" into other jobs....). I'll contact MacDonald and ask them what their guidance is based on.

Cheers,
Neil
