These two parts were loose that go to my D6 5R- I think they go to the governor - spring is 5B9317 with the screw being 7B4997, correct? I think the pin, part number 7B4999 links the two together, but it's missing. I believe I can easily make one - does anyone know the correct length if this is what I need. Thank you!


 

That looks like the oil pump that lubricates the top bearings in the governor. I think you are correct in the pin and spring keep it engaged but I have no idea how long it would be. If it is no longer available from Cat you can submit a request for dimensions for the part.

I am not sure if the composition of the parts is detailed on the drawing but you will need to know how hard the steel is to make it out of.

I intend to make it out of a good quality drill bit of the proper diameter. I'm guessing it'll probably still be around when I'm not. Ha!

you can buy blanks of hss tool steel from most engineering suppliers in various sizes and shapes.

Keep in mind that most twist drills are bimetal meaning the shank is softer than the rest of the drill.

Unstyled, if you wouldn't mind, please share the dimensions of the pin when you get them. In taking apart my governor, I either lost it somehow or it was put back together without it.

No problem. Honestly, I plan on figuring out the length myself (hopefully). It shouldn't be real difficult to make and get very close to specs. May be a week or two though!

sheddcanyon: I ended up cutting a drill bit shank off to .578 thousandths. I'd have to measure the diameter (forgot) but it was undersized enough so that it could move freely. The oil screw (or whatever it's called) protrudes out about .020 from the governor housing give or take. The small spring free travel is about .060. This leaves roughly .040 to compress inside the bushing before bottoming out. This leaves a little compression, but not too much. This is a SHORT part, no wonder it came missing!
