I happened to find this page today, it was folded inside of a Operation and Maintenance Instructions manual for D7 7M & 3T tractors. It is dated 6-50.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. With advent of the grease cartridge I had forgot all about the times sucking a load of grease from the grease bucket. Usually quite messy too and guaranteed to give one greasy hands. ,

Oh those memories!
Always had a paddle from wood shingle in the bucket and was told to never trust that spring loaded plunger in the notch. Blocked it off with a nail or screwdriver to prevent premature unloading!
Not too sure which was messy, the Track/Roller lube or the Lincoln grease gun!

Ugh. I remember as a kid having to use bulk grease, because big brother said grease tubes cost too much money...always fighting air pockets in the gun or a mess everywhere. Come to think of it, we did not own an air compressor to blow out the air filters daily; we did not own a water truck to keep the dust down either.
I am amazed we survived being farmers all those years. Being frugal was an understatement.. LOL JM

The air compressor for tires was the spark plug air pump from Sears. The Ford 8N was hard to start on 4 cylinders and even worse when there were only three working because the spark plug tire pump was in one. I got tired of that when I was about 13 and belted two Briggs and Strattons together on a board, one with the spark plug tire pump in it and the other to run the now-make-do compressor.

Oh to give thanks for living so high on the hog. I played in plenty of grease and that piece of shingle, but never sucked grease out of the drum as a kid. ALL GREASE was put in the bucket pump. What was needed was pumped into the smaller grease gun. But alas I did get the privilege of sucking grease out of 5 gal bucket on my first long term job away from the home ranch. But after loosing several buckets of grease to misshapes in the back of the service truck, the boss saw the lite his son had been telling him of, and we got grease cartages.

i hate filling grease guns with bulk grease. just use cartridges. yes bulk is cheaper if you use large volumes but for love of god get a drum pump. dad used to carry a 5 kilo tub of grease in the truck for one purpose only greasing turntables. a stick and you could quickly add enough grease.

the only reason for most people to buy 5 kilo tubs is to hand pack wheel bearings.
