Jan M should be reading this thread. I think he has a D8 that has pony fits and has never figured out why the heck it will not fire off proper? JM

I had a problem with the pony (we call them donkey engines here in the UK) on my D7 7M.
I cranked and cranked (not easy as my tractor is a "side start" so you can't get a good swing) until it raised blisters on my hands.
It would fire but wouldn't run.
I pulled the spark plugs out and one had a microscopic filament of carbon shorting the plug gap. You could hardly see it but it was enough to stop that plug sparking.
A good "blow" dislodged it, plugs back in and it's not been a problem since.

I had this problem seemed to be a spark on both sides but it was very temperamental ,
It turned out to be the cap was tracking across and causing cross firing and running on one cylinder .😵‍💫

I worked on snowmachines  (AKA. snowmobiles) back in the 60's and we really didn't use much of an air cleaner. Moisture was your enemy. So the little speck was common, we called it a whisker... between the electrodes.

a freind of dads had a f series ute that was missfiring occasionally and just running like a bag of shit. new plug new lead still wasnt quite right. he found out why one night when he lifted the bonnet in the dark the dissy cap was bad enough you could see it tracking and watch the arc as it rotated. it didnt look bad in day light but it was the problem

With ignition stuff, I've seen enough of my own stuff that by default, I replace all the "consumables" so I get to a known state of theoretical reliability - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor. That has fixed 100% of my fuel problems every time, and it's not an expensive measure to take. It's not worth my time to dink around with battling those components.

Cheers,
Neil

Solved the problem; turns out while one plug wire would show spark, it did so only intermittingly. Found short behind the engine. Replaced wire and she fired right off.
