Steve1ac: Drain the pony heads first; squirt some lube inside the spark plug holes; make a turning bar for the rope pulley and try and rock it back and forth. I have had pony motors that just had a sticky piston from sitting, nothing wrong with engine, just needed some "persuasion" from many years of sitting. You are on the right track. Good luck. JM

Sounds like Main Flywheel Clutch may be out of adjustment.

Also-suggest to avoid the temptation of regularly starting Main by holding pinion lever up. A lot of posts suggesting avoiding that.

As for the latches letting go early, it can only take a quick “bark” of the diesel for those to unlatch. Could be just one is out of adjustment if someone in the past didn’t set them correctly.

Have fun-keep safe

Thanks Bernie
Serial number 5u17156   It is a D2
just short of me going down to the homeplace and digging out all the manuals that dad had for this machine, would you be able to basically say what it takes to adjust this main clutch
I’ve got Allis charmers antique tractors crawl under it remove the plate expose Fly wheel and adjust forks this process is pretty Simple
I can remember one or two projects that dad and I did on this machine nothing was simple.

Yes, the problem is it seems some Cat designers never had to actually work on their own designs as mechanics. If they had had to spend a year in a workshop, the designs would have been much more service-friendly I'm sure.

To Neil thanks Just short of me leaving through all this material than dad had
On your fly wheel removal, socket and impact nut off then did you need or make some kind of puller to remove fly wheel
How many d2 s. do you have
You're welcome Steve. For flywheel removal, yes an impact and 1/2" rattler will get the nut off after flattening the lock washer. You definitely need a puller that screws into the two holes on the flywheel and bears against the crankshaft pilot. I have an OTC with a straight slotted bar and I thread I think it's 3/8NF bolts into the flywheel. Do not under any circumstances pound axially on the pony crank or flywheel, because the main bearings that maintain axial clearance are only retained by a pair of small dowels through the soft aluminum bearings. I have two D2s: a 3J4086 and 5U13753. It's not going to kill the tractor if you have to hold the pinion engagement up a couple of times but that really is just a few times - if you have to hold it, plan a weekend in the next one-to-two weeks to address the issue so you get it done

Cheers,
Neil

the grinding is either the clutch isnt releasing properly due to out of adjustment or excess wear. or you moving to quickly to engage a gear. yes adjust the pinion latches it best if they are working properly.

You must engage the clutch brake on Caterpillars to properly engage gears from neutral. This does not indicate clutch out of adjustment.
