Hi everyone
I have just finished restoring my D2 3J and I am trying to work out why my left brake pedal sort of pulses up and down about 1/2” when applied I have adjusted it up as per the manual including the bolt underneath but makes no difference. The tractor still turns fine and brake seems to work good. Does anyone know what this might be telling me?
any help appreciated
thanks
Zeke

Most likely cause is worn and loose upper pinion shaft bearings in the final drive that allow the brake drum and friction discs to drop down when the steering clutch is released, then when the clutch is engaged again the friction discs are all slightly off-center with the steels inside the clutch pack, which will cause the brake drum to rotate in an eccentric motion which pulses the pedal. I had this happen on one of my D2’s once and replacing those loose pinion shaft bearings cured the problem. When mine was pulsing the brake pedal, I did notice that the pulsing went away whenever I had the steering clutch lever pulled back, and returned again as soon as I let it return to the forward position.

Hi
thanks for your reply I watched quite a few of your starting engine videos on YouTube when I was doing that and found very helpful
I have marked on the picture below the bearings I think you are meaning and I guess mine being a narrow gauge tractor this would be exaggerated as I think I only have 2 bearings looking at my spare pinion
cheers

there is 3 bearings on that shaft and a little play in those bearings can be a lot of movement at the other end of the shaft.

Out of round brake drum. Heel adjustment of the band.It won't do anything for the pulsing of the brake pedal but it is an important adjustment. Good job on the restore✅👍
