New to me D4 was created by Haus
I recently bought this 29A D4. I couldn't seem to get a blade and associated parts to suit my 7U, so another tractor with compatible parts seemed like a good idea.

NICE!!!! Brush canopy, belly guard, large idlers, 'backscratcher' - what more could a man want? How is the 'backscratcher' controlled?

Thanks Deas and Daryl,

I'm not sure there is anything more I could want to be honest. I thought this would need some repair before it could be used, but it turns out with a bit of work, oil and adjustment it's going well. Seems one of the steering clutch assist mechanisms was hanging up and keeping it disengaged. Fingers crossed.

Deas - the ripper has a ram mounted on the rear case. Seems all the bracketry pulls from the original draw bar which is good. I was afraid of the ripper system because my 7U has had some studs pulled out of the rear case. I'm led to believe this is a better (less wild) arrangement than that one had.

very similar to our 6u except for the rippers and air pre cleaner.

Hi Haus,
If your steering clutches are hanging up take the cover off under the fuel tank and you will see two bearings there, there are also two more underneath too, most likely they are rusted up and will need cleaning and greasing.

Thanks rax200,

I did shoot some oil into the top of these. Two under the big cover plate and the rear most two under individual small covers. So far the clutch that was sticking has freed up (full power to that side now).

Is there a good way to lubricate or clean these bearings without pulling the case? Is it worth trying to flush with kero or similar and then push grease in? ....or should I leave them alone while they're free?

Also would I be right in thinking that anything I put in the top of the steering clutch compartment will harmlessly run out of the bungs in the bottom?

Hi Haus,
No not really, you could get lucky and maybe able to remove the top bearings by trying to hook them out when there is no presure on them.

As to lubricate the bearings I would try and get them as clean as possible from the old grease, dirt, rust and the spray it with a lithium based grease, as for any liquids that goes in that area it comes out the bungs.

Hi, Haus.
The Cat 941 track loaders, virtually a D4 back end, had a triangular shaped plate that was pinned in the drawbar pull point under the machine and bolted to the ripper mounting plate. This arrangement took all of the pull from the ripper and transferred it to the drawbar pull point which was designed to take it instead of it being left solely to the drawbar carry frame mountings on the back of the steering clutch case which were not designed to take it.
