I was browsing dozers for sale and saw a D4D going cheap with the ominous words: has water in the oil on the ad. Does anyone feel like speculating on possible causes and their seriousness?
I'm thinking: blown head gasket, or cracked head, or cracked engine block, with the first being minor, the second being serious, and the third being major.
Thoughts?

Could also be the seals on the bottom of the sleeves. Maybe an internal leak in a heat exchanger although that usually ends up with oil in the water.

PhilC - ok that's interesting to know (and would go on the "major" list).

RED Flags - How Much Water is in the Oil? How Much has it run with water in the oil? Any bubbles in radiator?
Bearings and Water are not very compatible - you might be looking at a Major Overhaul anyway you go,
As with anything - you should fully access the condition of the entire machine - Sometimes CHEAP means, I want more than junk price and rid myself of a headache!

CTS - I don't know the answers to any of those questions sorry - I've only seen the brief description in the add and haven't talked to the owner about it. I think that you are right to say that you would have to assume that it would require a major overhaul of the engine (as well as anything else it might require).

a family friend had a issue with her benz and water getting to the oil, we added a bottle of nulon engine sealer and it fixed it so some times they are a easy fix. yes many mechanic in a bottle remedies are just band-aid solutions.
really untill you see the machine you cant tell anything. it might be simple it might be a full rebuild.

Trainzkid88 - true, from what has been said though, I have a feeling that assuming it will be a full rebuild is the safe assumption.
