Hello, this is my first time posting. Long time viewer first time posting. I have worked for a Cat dealer for 23 years and I have finally been able to acquire a dozer of my own. I found this D2 close to home and was able to get it for a great price. It has a wet main clutch that seems to engage and disengage but when I put the steering levers they feel like they don’t move anything. The brakes don’t seem like they move very far either. I have a parts manual coming and a service manual. I have been a loyal Squatch253 viewer for years and I haven’t seen any of his tractor’s have a steering clutch set up like mine. Any advice or ideas on what I need to do will be appreciated.

Once you get your service manual, review the instructions for adjusting the steering and brakes. Since these old tractors aren't used in production any more, they typically aren't scrupulously maintained, and if they're not operated often, can go out of optimal adjustment without much use

it should feel like there is some resistance on the steering clutch levers and pedals. the drive clutch it self should be a nice over centre snap and lock in and when you release it same thing you should feel it go back over centre and release. from memory the main clutch lever is right when its a pull of around 75lbs measured on a spring balance to engage it.

the method for turning is pull the steering clutch lever and stand on the brake for the side you wish to turn to. the clutch releases the drive the brake holds the track. these are the original skid steer.

if it hasnt moved in a while these can be a bit stuck so run it around the yard in first gear alternately turning left and right and it should free up. it also probably out of adjustment. if this was a farm crawler it probably will be more worn on one side than the other as most farm tractors primarily turn one way (many people have gotten caught out with wheeled tractors because of this)

the service book has the info needed to adjust them. also get your self the owners maintenance book. there is separate parts and service books for the engine and attachments such as winches, hydraulics, dozer blades and toolbars etc.

Put a battery on it tonight and engine rolls over good. Have fuel pressure but no oil pressure. Little bit of smoke but no go. Tried rag soaked with gas but nothing. Going to drain oil and pull pump. I have not received my service manual yet. Can you pull the oil pump without pulling the pan?

Not as far as I know, but give it a shot and let us know how you get on. There is some access from the side covers but I don't know if it's enough to accomplish your goal

not that i know of. no oil pressure can be the relief valve. some machines also had a bypass valve if it has stuck open you wont get good oil pressure. the gauge could also be faulty. before tearing it down go and buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge and plumb it in and try again. also check the oil filter it could be bad. its possible for the thing to stick and thus not give a correct reading. now they dont have much oil pressure from memory its flat being 30 psi someone else will know more precisly.

Another thing is if this tractor has sat a long time, it may take some time to get the oil pump primed again. Rather than pull the pump I would check the pump pickup screen. If there is alot of sludge it can plug the screen. Also some water from years of condensation could have some ice in there. Do some diagnostics before yanking the pump.
