Hello I just bought a 955 12A model traxcavator it's been sitting for years and has one stuck steering clutch and maybe the transmission clutch as well but I'm not sure. I just got it running got the hydraulics working and both steering levers were stuck but was able to free one of them just by moving it back and fourth. everything worked when the machine was parked many years ago and I need to move it because the property was sold where it sits now. Does anyone have any advice on what to do to free the steering lever? Thank you in advance for any help someone can provide.

My buddy's HT4 wouldn't steer and it was due to the steering being out of adjustment. We adjusted one spot-on and the other requires us to remove the fuel tank so we can unseize the adjuster. Try that first (manuals are available in the library here) and see what you get. It's quite easy to overshoot the adjustment but if the levers themselves are relatively free (spray some lube), the you can feel when the actual clutches start disengaging to help you get in the ballpark. If you adjust (in both directions) and it doesn't seem to help, then your clutches might be stuck. If that's the case, then adjust them right up so that they will disengage the most, then drive around with your feet jammed hard on the brakes - make them smoke. The idea is to heat up the hubs to hopefully expand the components to make them "crack open". If that doesn't work, another tactic is to fill the steering clutch compartments with diesel up to just below the bearings and let them sit for days/weeks/months, rotating the clutches so that all the surfaces can sit in the fuel, and then try the braking approach again. If that doesn't work, you might be up for disassembling it. That is guaranteed to work but usually costs money as well as time : )

Cheers,
Neil

Thank you Neil I will try the adjusting them to open the most method because one must be stuck the other side was as well but it came lose after moving it back and fourth awhile. I have an issue with the clutch for the transmission sticking as well it moves some and is beginning to respond but still wants to grind when trying to engage, any tips for that as well other than just keep working it back and fourth? The machine has been sitting outside next to a pond since 1998 the longer it runs the better things seem to be working.

i would keep going gently does it though. it may well just be a bit bound up and gentle working might break it free.

The main transmission clutch has a brake to stop the transmission input shaft turning which prevents grinding the gears. The brake is activated by pushing the transmission clutch lever as far forwards as possible. Maybe this will help?

A 1955 12A that's an early one I would love to get some pictures. I have a mid 1960 D6 12A8263 955E, late series, and two 1957 D4 12A3563, 12A4040 955C.
I have the Parts Book, I will be sending a copy to the ACMOC Library soon. I have submitted the Operating & Maintenance Manual should be up soon. There is a lot of information on the D315. The D4 J series are very similar but I would strongly suggest that you find a set of manuals that covers your serial number. The ACMOC dose have the parts book for the 42A Bulldozer which is in essence the same engine, transmission and breaks & finals. However again I strongly recommend getting manuals that cover your serial number..
good luck and thanks
